DEC Nabs Choma Drug Traffickers, Seizes Over 500kgs of Fresh Cannabis in Northern Province
The Drug Enforcement Commission (DEC) has struck a major blow against drug trafficking networks, arresting two suspected traffickers from Choma and seizing more than 500 kilograms of fresh cannabis in Northern Province.
According to DEC Public Relations Officer Allan Tamba, the operation was conducted by the Anti-Drug Abuse Commission in Chinsali District, where two individuals were intercepted while transporting the illicit substance.
The suspects, identified as Gernard Hachipola, 39, and Best Mwanza, 31, both residents of Choma District in Southern Province, were apprehended in possession of 537.2 kilograms of fresh cannabis. The drugs were found concealed in a Toyota Alphard, believed to have been used to ferry the contraband from Choma to Chinsali.
Tamba revealed that the two were intercepted following a tip-off and a swift response from the commission’s operations unit.
“The DEC has continued to intensify its operations and intelligence work to stem the distribution and trafficking of illicit drugs across the country. We commend the public for cooperating and providing valuable leads,” he stated.
The suspects are currently in custody and will appear in court soon, charged with trafficking in psychotropic substances, contrary to the Laws of Zambia.
This latest bust forms part of a larger crackdown by the DEC, targeting trafficking routes and suppliers operating across provinces. Authorities have reiterated their commitment to eradicating illegal drug activities and called on citizens to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity.
What This Means for the Community
With drug abuse continuing to pose a threat to public health and safety, the DEC’s proactive approach sends a clear message: trafficking and cultivation of illicit substances will not be tolerated.
The seizure of over half a tonne of cannabis is not just a legal victory, but a major step toward disrupting the supply chain of harmful substances that often end up affecting youth and vulnerable communities.
As the legal process unfolds, authorities urge citizens to be allies in the fight against drug abuse by staying informed, reporting suspicious movements, and supporting awareness programs in their areas.
