Namwala Council Responds to Public Outcry, Sets Plan to Grade M-Eleven–Mukobela Road
In response to growing public frustration, the Namwala Town Council has announced plans to grade the dilapidated seven-kilometre stretch of road connecting M-Eleven to Mukobela Chiefdom—a route many residents rely on for daily transport, trade, and access to essential services.
Namwala Town Council Chairperson, Abel Moonga, confirmed the development in an interview with Byta FM News, stating that the Local Authority had received numerous complaints regarding the poor condition of the road.
“We are aware of the long-standing concerns from the public. This particular road has been a major source of distress for road users, especially during the rainy season when it becomes nearly impassable,” Moonga explained.
Suspension of Works Due to Staffing Challenges
Moonga disclosed that road maintenance works were previously suspended, citing the lack of a qualified Earth Moving Machinery Operator as the main obstacle.
“The Council had to temporarily halt works because we didn’t have a competent operator to handle the machinery safely and efficiently. That issue has now been resolved,” he said.
He added that the Council has now hired a certified operator, and grading activities will resume in full swing in the coming days.
Community Relief and High Expectations
Residents of Mukobela Chiefdom, who have long struggled with the bumpy and dusty road, have welcomed the announcement with cautious optimism. Francis Simushi, a long-time resident of the area, said the grading is not just a luxury—it’s a lifeline for the community.
“This road is our connection to markets, clinics, and schools. We’ve suffered for years, especially during emergencies when transportation becomes almost impossible. We hope this time the work will be done quickly and thoroughly,” Simushi remarked.
Looking Ahead
While the immediate focus is on grading, residents and community leaders are calling for a more sustainable, long-term road improvement plan. Some have urged the government to explore graveling or tarring the road in future phases to ensure year-round accessibility.
The M-Eleven to Mukobela route serves as a vital link for both economic activity and social services, and its rehabilitation is expected to bring significant relief to farmers, traders, students, and the general public.
As the Namwala Town Council moves forward with the planned works, the community remains hopeful that this marks the beginning of consistent infrastructure development in the district.
